Collecting, both a hobby and a disease


Who didn\’t collect something as a child and trade it with friends? Be it stamps, napkins, C\’s, stickers, labels, or Kinder egg characters. It is children in the early elementary grades who are passionate about collecting. Later, they abandon this hobby and replace it with other hobbies. But for some, the collector\’s heart remains with them for the rest of their lives. Collectors need order and patience. Collectors spend years, often a lifetime, building up collections of different objects. It is a passion, a hobby, a pleasure to the individual, and sometimes even an investment activity. Those who become addicted to collecting take their hobby very seriously and invest considerable money and time in their collections to acquire their dream pieces.

Stamp collectors collect stamps, coin collectors collect coins, postcard collectors are called philokartiers, and autograph collectors collect philographs. The largest collectors\‘ club in the Czech Republic is the Rarities Collectors\‘ Club. It organizes not only proud collectors of traditional collectibles, but also collectors of beer coasters, dolls, napkins, pens, mugs, and more. There are online auctions, meetings, and social events where items can be bought, sold, and exchanged. Traditional collectors can join other international clubs and associations.

But there is also a pathological collecting called Diogenes syndrome. It is the over-collection of objects that appear to be valuable to the collector, yet have no value. Unfortunately, there are also animal collections. Often this problem occurs with lonely elderly people. Often, apartments are cluttered with all sorts of things, with only narrow passages between things. If there are too many cats or dogs, the apartments become smelly and destroyed by their excrement. Unfortunately, only a psychiatrist can solve this problem. However, these people are content with this way of life, and removing them from their environment is problematic. They are, however, a nuisance to the people living in the surrounding apartments.
